Janet's critical writings on contemporary architecture, design and ceramics have appeared in print and online publications including Blueprint, DomusI.D. International Design Magazine, frieze, core77.com, CfileThe Independent, and The New York Times; and in artist monographs and books including Else/Where: Mapping — New Cartographies of Networks and Territories which she co-edited.  She was Director of the University of Minnesota Design Institute from 2000-08, before returning to graduate school to train in fine art.

She holds a BSc in Architecture, Planning, Building & Environmental Science from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College, London University (1980); a PhD in Architectural History, Theory & Criticism from Princeton University (1989); and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan (2010), where she focused on ceramics and installation.

Her awards include a Fulbright Scholarship to the U.S. (1983), the Royal Institute of British Architects' Architectural Journalist of the Year award (1986 and 1987), a MacDowell Colony Fellowship (1995), and SITE Santa Fe's 2014 SPREAD 5.0 award for New Mexico based studio artists.  She has held artist residencies at the Banff Centre, Canada; A.I.R. Vallauris, France; and the European Ceramic Work Centre, The Netherlands.
